Personality:
To is the definition of a stoic, calm, composed, and rarely showing his emotions, at least not in a typical way. Frustration and annoyance, not necessarily anger, are the emotions he’s most likely to vent, but there’s plenty of subtle tells to figure out what he’s feeling, slight twitches, shifts in posture, maybe even a rare smile. However, unlike what most people think of stoic individuals, he’s actually quite personable. Specifically, he likes hearing people talk. He rarely contributes a lot to a conversation himself, but he’s quite fond of having someone talk at him, often while working, and he pays more attention to the conversation than most might think. When he does talk, he considers those words very carefully, as if making sure he doesn’t waste a syllable.
Thanks to this he has a reputation among a few people and places as a man one can go to to talk about problems, and even get some carefully thought out advice, and even if not, it’s at least a man who will pay attention to what one has to say. He also prefers to eat many, many small meals across the day rather than the usual saiyan style of cleaning out an entire buffet in one sitting. This is punctuated with larger than average (for other species) breakfasts and dinners.
Chard has a very strong passion for metalworking, engineering, mechanics, and to a lesser extent programming (it’s a bit too frustrating and hands off in comparison to the others). He makes as much of his own equipment as possible and has picked up a variety of other skills to supplement it. He has a strong respect for others with other passions focused on creation, design, and has less respect for those that have focused themselves entirely on combat, thinking it a waste of time and one of the reasons for the Saiyan Race’s generally poor lot in the galactic scheme of things.
History:
Chard’s life started like most saiyans did, with him being shipped off to a planet as an infant to wipe out the native population. It was actually a pretty strong success. Essentially no problems whatsoever, in less than a year he annihilated almost everyone on the planet, and was on his own, waiting for his people to come and collect him. It took about a year, and during that time he explored a lot of ruined cities, and saw a lot of mechanical wonders. He had absolutely no idea what any of it was, he was far too young, barely even able to understand what he was seeing, merely a toddler by the time he was taken off the planet, but something about it stuck with him. Something about the complicated gears, the exposed innards of complex machinery from the destruction he’d wrought, it sowed the seeds of a curiosity that would stick with him, or perhaps was merely the start of nurturing an intellect and drive that would have manifested from the start.
As Chard grew older, he grew stronger, got properly inducted and embroiled in Saiyan culture, a culture focused on strength, power, martial prowess, a society where most of their technology and gadgets came from outside sources, provided by the PTO. His fellow saiyans didn’t seem interested in figuring out how it worked, as long as it did work. It was a mindset that he just couldn’t get himself to agree with, and he started tinkering and investigating, got his shit kicked in a couple of times by his fellow saiyans for breaking gear a few times, but if anything that only spurred him on to go further, to find a way to learn. It ultimately lead to him joining the PTO in full, ditching his actual race, in fact it was safe to say he actually grew rather disillusioned with them as he left to pursue his interests.
It was pretty hard to prove himself as an actual worthwhile student, Saiyans had a reputation and they had that reputation for a reason. He had to work harder than almost anyone else in the field to get there, but he put in that effort, he grit his teeth and applied himself, and he slowly rose to the top. He gained a deep appreciation of the field, and slowly earned the respect of teachers, peers, and eventually his fellow engineers, becoming fully certified, and slowly building up the resources and means, and essentially abandoning his actual race entirely. When he heard about the planet’s destruction it was a shock to the system but ultimately...he didn’t have enough investment in his people to truly be heartbroken or hold a grudge. In a way he couldn’t help but wonder if the Saiyans hadn’t brought it on themselves, and so he just soldiered on, he’d only just graduated into the field as a proper engineer at the time, but that was hardly the end.
He’s had decades since then, his people have been restored, he doesn’t know how, and he didn’t particularly care. He had a strong career, no longer working for the PTO, he is the definition of a freelancer, designing for just about anyone. He actually has a pretty strong reputation in the industry and he’s been called in to design entire devices, serve an advisory role, give a secondary opinion on designs submitted by someone else, and well it’s a pretty good life as far as he’s concerned. He’s still far stronger than the vast majority of people, but compared to his own species?
Well, his rather combat light life has led to him being fairly weaker than one might expect from his rather respectable age.
