Personality:
The only thing that matters is having fun. This simple sentence can easily sum up Juscella’s entire world view. There’s no great purpose, there’s no greater meaning. The universe is a joke and whoever made it isn’t very good at comedy so why worry about anything? Eat whatever you want, do whatever brings you joy, don’t worry about wasting your life because ultimately whether you do something incredible or just spend your life in the mountains catching fish, it all ultimately means the same thing.
This has led her to doing many things modern society has labeled illegal, although there are a number of things she tends to avoid. She prefers to avoid killing if possible for instance. While some of the things she avoids are just things she doesn’t find fun, there is another underlying reason. While Juscella completely believes that life is pointless and you should do what you want, sometimes doing what you want requires some more careful consideration. If she for instance, wanted to go around slaughtering people, this would foster an environment where other people would be more likely to try and do the same, to people she didn’t want dead, or even the woman herself. Thus to avoid constant endless attempts on one’s life, it is better to avoid doing that so they can enjoy everything else more.
Juscella makes friends fast, but isn’t particularly concerned about their coming and going. She has little regard for laws about property, stealing or illegal substances and parties hard and often. She’s also shockingly quick to forgive those who have done her wrong, as long as they don’t try it again, there’s no problem right?
History:
Juscella didn’t know her parents. Of course she couldn’t have, given there weren’t any parents, but growing up she didn’t know she was just a talking petri dish. She was raised by a single man, a capable and skilled martial artist who wanted to give her a normal and proper life, and teach her to restrain the urges that came from, according to him, her mother’s lineage. She had to be homeschooled too, after all in a crowded school environment, being surrounded by so many strangers for so many hours a day, a single slip up could spill her secret to the entire school and the city at large.
Naturally children aren’t always so easily placated, and Juscella cherished any chance to visit the outside world. Fortunately her ‘guardian’ wasn’t cruel, he kept a tight grip on her, but he would let her come with him when he needed to go into the city for supplies, but her interactions with other people were limited. This of course left her tremendously curious, her guardian attempted to keep her distracted by forcing her to focus on martial arts, training her and using it as part of his lessons in instilling discipline, but as she grew older, as the teenaged years struck she grew more and more dissatisfied.
So what if she could do more than other people could? She still looked like any of them! As long as she didn’t go and twist her body in weird ways what were they going to notice? Friction began to build between her and her guardian, she even started to sneak out…she was often caught and resoundly punished but not always, and in those times she’d sneak into the city’s night life, and it was a good time. Of course a young girl on her own was a target for certain unsavory folks, but they learned much to their misfortune that they weren’t the predator in such scenarios, which eventually drew attention of a different kind, quite interested in this strange young delinquent trying to sneak into bars and party.
Of course any offer of employment would be met with the harsh reality that her guardian would never allow it, but as she grew closer to adulthood she managed to get him to acquiesce on something else, her education. His homeschooling was actually pretty good, she was a smart girl and was interested in a higher education. Namely her lonely life, and the baffling mysteries of her lineage had her interested in biology and anatomy to try and figure out what she was, where her mother had come from. Although that interest was going to change dramatically.
After she’d turned eighteen, shortly after being accepted into the college she had chosen, she returned home to find their home on the outskirts of East City in flames. A raging inferno that she plunged into past the fighters to find her guardian, a man who she may as well have called father, seemingly dead, his body clearly brutalized in a fight rather than burned. Yet as she touched him, he suddenly came alive, grasping her shoulder with a tight painful grip, his eyes still glassy, unseeing, but words croaked from a throat with a last bit of air…’it’s in my back…tooth.’ Then he collapsed.
Asking the person in charge of the autopsy to check his back teeth for anything unusual felt terribly strange and uncomfortable, but the words burned in her head. His spirit had clung to his body, refusing to leave the corpse until he’d said them, so it must matter right? What the coroner found was a tiny small capsule secured in a false tooth, so small as to be nearly impractical, they weren’t even sold commercially. The police would of course want it as evidence for their investigation, but that didn’t stop her from taking it anyways to see what it contained…a small, old book, carefully filled out.
Apparently, her guardian had been a member of a shadowy galactic research group, and she’d been an experiment, testing the effects and outcomes of raising an artificial creature in a specific environment. Whether she’d be able to be taught to control her hunger and powers, whether she’d rebel, how much. Evidently he’d long expected they might pull something like this, see how she’d react, how she’d grow or develop on a ‘revenge quest’ and he’d been damned if he was going to just be killed for this. If they dared try and just kill him instead of swapping in a clone after all his hard work, then that was what this was for.
It ended with a call demanding that she, as the girl he raised and taught everything he know, strike out and “tear their bastard hearts out”. Unfortunately it didn’t seem to do much to motivate her. Possibly because of the rather mind shattering revelation that there was no ‘mother’ she wasn’t a strange and unusual species, she was an experiment, a carefully crafted organism splicing DNA from primarily three, with only a handful of others to properly unify and bind, to ‘fill in the gaps’.
Was she…even a person at all?
It was an answer she desperately felt a need for, but at the same time, what about her guardian? The man who raised her? Shouldn’t she try to fulfill his wishes? Yet at the same time, how the book he’d left was written was…it gave light to a sense of entitlement he clearly felt for her, insisting that she had to do this, it was his right to do so, something that still stung in her mind resounding off of her many issues with her limited freedom, and where would she even start in finding some shadowy organization? The book hadn’t even told her how!
That was what cinched it, she didn’t even know where to start, she could only let the police investigate and…well, college was right there, and she could switch to philosophy without much trouble. Androids had been a staple of life on Earth for years now, maybe someone had done some writing on them…maybe she could be one of the pioneers in it. The investigation turned up a number of strange and bizarre clues, pointing to a person who might be responsible for it, but not someone well known or easy to track. At the same time, philosophy turned out to be rather interesting, and focusing on the many different theories, schools of thought and more, and with time slowly dulling pain, Juscella’s mind started to coalesce around a certain viewpoint whenever she tried to really think about what was going on with her father figure’s death.
This entire thing was so stupid.
At first it felt downright blasphemous to think but…this ‘mysterious figure’ was almost certainly a deliberate breadcrumb trail from this organization that wanted to study her right? So, would going after this figure actually lead her anywhere meaningful? The only reason she knew the trick was because her father had just…hidden an impractically small capsule in a tooth and just haunted his body until she showed up! That mysterious figure could just be a completely ordinary hitman with no actual connections to the organization, and…did she want to?
Learning more about philosophy also included many ponderings and discussion of ethics, morals and so on, and that made her reflect even more poorly on what she increasingly thought of as the man’s ‘true feelings’ regarding her. There wasn’t a lot of sympathy in it, there were no apologies for lying, no statements that implied any kind of empathy for how she might feel learning that her mysterious parents had just never existed and she’d never find anything about them. Yet if she didn’t pursue this lead, what other leads did she have?
Which lead to another question. Did she actually want answers? As two full years since her guardian’s death approached, Juscella began to coalesce, to gravitate towards schools of philosophy rooted in a specific concept: Nihilism.
Was she even a person? Who cares?
Her ‘father’ had viewed her as a thing he was going greatly out of his way to pretend to care about at all. The shadowy organization just saw her as a guinea pig, and frankly everything she learned about history and heroes and villains? It was all just an endless back and forth. If there was an afterlife, as seemed strongly suggested by a number of historical records, then he was either in hell, and not worth fighting for, or he was in some kind of heaven and logically not care anymore, and she didn’t feel like trying to chase down the deliberately placed breadcrumbs of some super secret organization of mad scientists, if they really wanted more out of her, they’d have to do something themselves right?
So Juscella…stopped caring. She was going to have fun, and part of that was seeking out a few old ‘friends’ from when she’d started sneaking out as a teenager, dropping out of college, and getting a career path that better enabled her to enjoy herself, with some ‘open minded folks’ that didn’t mind having a biological freak along for the party.
