There are many words that could describe the Earth-raised Saiyan, Kombu. Respect, kindness, compassion, loving, and friendly to name a few. Kombu was raised to have a good head on his shoulders. Naturally, because of his Saiyan Pride, he becomes thrilled by battle and lives to grow ever-stronger to face new challenges in his life. That being said, he knows the right moment when to reign his Pride in by the horns. This Saiyan will not needlessly throw his life away or put others in danger for the sake of having a better combat experience.
While it's normal for Saiyans to be elitist and claim to be the superior beings in the Universe (as most ignorant individuals do), Kombu's parents taught him not to judge a person on their background or their race, but to judge them based on their beliefs and their character. To extend kindness to all who deserved it; even some who did not. There are people who would swear up and down until blue in the face that kindness was a weakness. Kombu, and people like him, are living proof that it takes true strength to be kind when being cruel is too easy.
Mercy is one thing which Kombu holds close to his heart. The mysterious fighter showed mercy to his parents on their mission before their escape from Vegeta. In turn, Kombu will show mercy to all. Even if a person will throw it back in his face out of spite. He believes there can be good in everyone. This belief, however, might one day come back to bite him. As so far, he has not had to take a person's life. And he hopes to never have to.
Blame his Saiyan Pride, but 'give up' is not in Kombu's dictionary. He is ever-determined to give it his all in every battle near the end, especially if the lives of others are on the line. He does not easily retreat from battle. Kombu is a Saiyan, after all. Only when events are most dire, and there is nothing to do but retreat, he will only do so when he absolutely has to so he may become stronger and issue a challenge for a rematch.
History: On the planet Vegeta there lived the Saiyans. A race bred by war since the dawn of their existence. And eventually, it would be their blood thirst that would lead them to victory and their domination over their peaceful, but tech-savvy neighbors, the Tuffles. And since then, their warrior lifestyle was expanded upon when they began their journey to the stars to pillage other planets to sell to the highest bidder.
Leak, and his wife, Verna, were no different. These Saiyans were lucky enough to become mid-class warriors. Not entirely treated like trash, as was customary for the low-class Saiyans of the empire, but not quite treated like royalty. At the very least, mid-class warriors were granted some status of respect and dignity. Even better, they were enabled to battle against stronger foes and gain strength at a faster rate than most.
This pair in particular loved the thrill of battle. But unlike their kin, they did not necessarily enjoy dominating the weak. Still. They knew that they had no choice. Any signs of weakness in the Empire could lead to subjugation, embarrassment, or worse. Sure it was fun to get into scrapes and challenge themselves against the militaries of other worlds, but deep down, they were conflicted. Leak and Verna were hardened combatants, but beneath their stony exteriors they were also kind and compassionate. After the birth of their son, Kombu, their beliefs would be called into question even further on one fateful day.
Leak and Verna were sent alone on a mission to conquer a planet in the name of the Saiyans. A mixture of high expectations and pride weighed heavy on them from their home's military. But once they arrived, they would soon realize just how much they and the other Saiyans had underestimated the species of which they were invading. Clearly, this would prove to be a Pyrrhic victory.
Or so they thought.
Initially, the pair was completing their task, although arduous. But when the mission was appearing to be in their favor, one of the planet's strongest warriors stepped into the fight. The Saiyans, initially overestimating their own abilities, found themselves beaten to near-death and at their victor's mercy. They expected to die by the warrior's hand. However, shockingly, he spared their lives.
The fighter expressed that he wanted to give them a second chance despite the atrocities that the Saiyans committed.
When asked why, when Leak and Verna were Saiyans, the fighter paused. He explained that he could tell that they were not like other Saiyans. That the pair lacked evil in their eyes. The fighter had a hunch that the husband and wife were different.
This act of kindness changed Leak and Verna's views of the Saiyan race drastically. Here they were, fighters in a warrior race, members of a society where strength was everything...Being spared out of the kindness of the heart of a stranger, who did not judge them for their species or the actions of their people.
It was time to return home to Planet Vegeta. There was just one problem; failure was not something that was taken lightly by the throne. Surely upon their return, Leak and Verna would more than likely be tried for treason against their King for not completing their mission. The best possible scenario? Execution. So on their way back to their home, they would enact a plan to escape.
The two Saiyans landed on the outskirts of the city under the cover of darkness. And as luck would have it, there happened to be a meteor shower on the night of their arrival. A perfect cover for their pods to enter the atmosphere. Quickly and quietly the lovers located their son only to whisk him away back to their vessels.
The family was once again reunited. Leak entered a pod alone, while Verna entered hers with her son. Both ships took off and delved into the void of space, leaving the red planet behind. The family traveled among the stars. They heard rumors of a faraway planet, covered in blue and green. Earth. It was decided that would be the place to continue their lives and raise their son.
Sample RP: Kombu was on his back, in the dirt and grass. Beaten. Bloodied. He knew he didn't have a good chance of winning when the fight first broke out, but despite the odds, he still gave it his all. Sadly? His all was not good enough. His chest heaved with labored breaths. Each inhale stung. Were his lungs bleeding? No...There was no gurgling sound that hit his ears.
Since the beginning of this battle, a cloud cover blanketed the sky. But now that Kombu was down for the count, the grey clouds started to clear. Kombu's eyes remained shut tight. He knew that this night had a full moon hanging in the heavens. He knew that he was not supposed to look at the moon when it was full and bright. Kombu's parents' words of warnings echoed in the forefront of his memory. It was clear as day, like a movie clip on loop.
But what choice did he have?
The enemy came closer and closer. If he didn't do something, Kombu would die here and now. And what would that accomplish? He'd die to protect someone, but fail to keep on living and get stronger.
"Gotta hand it to you, punk," the sandpaper voice spat, a shadowed figure wiping some blood from his eyebrow. "You got me pretty good...But it's time to end this. Don't worry. I'll make sure your parents are well taken care of when you're gone."
That was it. That was the straw that broke the camel's back. "Don't you dare," Kombu started, "hurt...My...PARENTS!" His voice howled, echoing across the area. It was loud enough, and angry enough, to startle the birds from their slumber and send them flying off into the night.
Kombu's eyes snapped open. His vision was greeted by the full moon. Just sitting there, in all of its splendor and brightness, looking down on the young Saiyan. His irises faded. The moonlight was the key to unlock the monster contained in its cage. His heart started to beat harder, and harder. Pounding against his ribs, threatening to escape like the thing Kombu tried to hide away for so many years.
Pain. An excruciating pain ran through the young Saiyan's body like a wildfire. The hairs on his tail stood on end while the furred appendage twitched. Goans of agony turned into screams of anger and anguish as he sat up. And the screams soon turned into dark howls of a beast. What humanity remained in his eyes were blotted out, and now red with bloodlust.
The transformation had begun. There was no stopping it now.
